One of the highlights of this week in Forensic Science is that students learned about different types of blood spatter and how to analyze spatter for such things as the angle, direction, and velocity of impact. They also learned how different types of surfaces, such as plastic sheeting or cloth (above), create differently shaped spatter.
The students used fake blood, of course, and coated different types of prop weapons (a plastic yellow bat [pictured above] and a plastic knife) with it. This was done to illustrate how tapered weapons, such as a knife, create finer spatters than blunt and broad weapons, such as a bat, which could aid in criminal investigations.
