After a comparison set of drawings, block printing based on sketches drawn in colored pencil, we moved into portraits. Photographs were taken and grossed out. Small studies were made in pencil to familiarize us with the subject matter. Then, out came the giant paper. Four by six feet of possibilities. The grid was transferred into these huge sheets, and using it as a guide, the students enlarged their photos, transferring the contours of their faces to the pages. Next came charcoal, then pastel.
