Seminar Spotlight: Creative Writing

This post was written by Anastasia H. and Courtney M.

After the first week of putting pen to paper the Creative Writing team has been inspired! Our fearless leader, Alexa Garvoille, has pushed us to expand our current work and styles of writing, and to explore new ways of expressing ourselves through words.

The first day we made group poems entirely out of lines from our favorite pieces. We try and share our work as much as possible to promote a safe and encouraging environment – and to giggle at the funny stories.

But that’s not all! There were dogs galore on Robert Frost’s Nature trail off campus (see the amazing Rodman contemplating life through poetry in the middle of the stream), where we tuned back into nature – bugs included. Some incredible works have examined who takes the blame when love is unrequited, unlocked the specific details of Putney through a writer’s eyes and even gave voice to a soccer ball.

More importantly, our imagination has gone wild. After being cryptically warned to “bring socks” to our community meeting on Tuesday, the Creative Writing class was thinking up all kinds of wacky things we might do! Some believed we would be playing a sock trading ice breaker, others though we’d need them for walking, and shampoo wrestling was even mentioned once or twice. But the reality was much more fun- bowling!

On Thursday, we spent some time outside again, this time on the quad. We got to revise our work and have some one-on-one time with Alexa for feedback. Lots of breakthroughs were made, even though revision can be a tough process. We also began exploring ideas for our final project- which seems far away now, but with the speed this week has completed, will surely come quicker than expected.
