To give you an update on what the Pre-Med basics class has been up to, three of the students Tamara, Maya and Aña shared their thoughts on what the most interesting aspects of the class have been:
Tamara has enjoyed:
– Meeting with the former governor of Vermont and learning about the opioid crisis.
– Having a conversation with Amherst College’s health professions advisor.
– Going to the Mead art museum and exploring objects and works of art related to science and medicine.
Maya’s favorite part of last week was:
-Being able to Skype with Danielle’s friend who works as a technician at the Boston Medical Examiner’s Office. It was interesting to see how forensics and medicine work together to find a potential cause of death. Also, it’s another path of medicine that seems the opposite of what you think you would go to med school for, because you’re looking at deceased people rather than looking at people you could potentially cure.
For Aña:
-These past 2 weeks have been full of excitement! My favorite thing so far was getting to go see the labs. I loved seeing how they were run by professors who were women and getting to see all of the experiments the students conducted. This showed me how broad of a spectrum pre-med really is.
