Here is an update of some of the amazing things that have been happening in the Pre-Med basics class throughout the program thus far!
Today was the first day of class! We went around and introduced ourselves and learned about what we will be doing for the next 3 weeks. After that, we discussed how medicine can be both a science and an art at the exact same time, and were asked to come up with some examples of this that would then be discussed the next day. I think it is fair to say that we are all extremely excited to take this course!!~ Aña Woodruff (Pre-Med Basics student)
Talked about art vs. science of medicine(very thought provoking)Went outside to read excerpts from Richard Selzer’s “Mortal Lessons: Notes on the Art of Surgery”— discussed medical ethicsTalked about the Hippocratic Oath, both the ancient Greek original and the modernized versionSaw a very cute dog (highlight)~ Gaelen and Sarah (Pre-Med Basics students)
We also toured two of Amherst’s finest biochemistry and biophysics labs, learning about biomedical science research firsthand from the professors and student interns who run them! (see photos attached)
Stay tuned for more updates!
