The Cape Cod crew started out in Yarmouth Port visiting the Edward Gorey House, a museum celebrating the life and work of the author, illustrator, playwright, and costume designer. The charming, whimsical house is over 200 years old and belonged to a sea captain before it was purchased by Gorey in the 1970’s. The museum visit was highlighted by a scavenger hunt for the characters of Gorey’s quirky illustrations!

Next we headed further into Cape Cod, set up shop at our hotel, and hung around the pool before heading into dinner. After dinner and ice cream, some of us played arcade games while others set mini-golf records at the local course.

On Saturday morning, we headed down to Chatham on the southern tip of the Cape for an adventure with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, the state’s premier shark research organization. Having chartered a private boat tour of the Chatham Harbor, we had a unique opportunity to learn firsthand about Cape Cod’s marine life from Giulia, an experienced naturalist and shark expert. As we cruised around the harbor looking for evidence of white shark activity, we encountered hundreds of (very curious and highly adorable) seals, visited a dogfish fishery, and enjoyed Giulia’s insights into the local marine ecology. At one point, we pulled up an underwater shark receiver to analyze its data log and see if any white sharks had recently passed through the harbor (sadly — or fortunately, for the seals — not on our visit!).

Before lunch, we stopped by the Shark Conservancy’s research station to learn more about the ongoing marine research projects on the Cape, including a Virtual Reality encounter with some very real-looking (but friendly) virtual Caribbean hammerhead sharks!

We spent the afternoon in vibrant, sunny Provincetown and the weather was good to us! We browsed, shopped and people-watched in town until dinner, which we enjoyed in a bayside restaurant. We ended our day skipping stones and tossing frisbees as the sun slowly set over the Cape.
